Define the project calendar

Confirm the intended start, project-specific work calendar, contract milestones, permit and inspection assumptions, and any dates the client or team is relying on.

Break the work into controllable activities

Use phases for navigation, but schedule work at the level where one person can own the next action and the team can identify a real prerequisite or completion condition.

Sequence prerequisites and parallel work

Ask what must finish before each activity can start and what can proceed in parallel. Record external constraints such as inspections, owner selections, shop drawings, or long-lead materials.

A practical residential schedule should identify phases, tasks, responsible people, planned and actual dates, status, percent complete, prerequisites, milestones, constraints, and notes. The level of detail should match the size and risk of the project.

Does this template calculate a critical path?

No. The workbook provides a readable baseline, planned-versus-actual dates, milestones, constraints, and near-term look-ahead planning. It is not a critical-path scheduling engine and should not be treated as one on complex work.

Are the sample durations recommended for every home project?

No. Every sample duration and sequence is illustrative. Replace it with project-specific information based on scope, permits, inspections, trade availability, procurement, weather, site conditions, production history, and the construction agreement.

How often should the schedule be updated?

Update actual dates and percent complete as conditions change, then run a consistent weekly schedule review. Near-term items may need daily attention when inspections, material deliveries, client decisions, or trade handoffs are at risk.
